Conformity means behavior in accordance with socially accepted standards. So, basically it means to act like, look like, and be like “society”. To be like everyone else is not fun! Life would be super boring without differences. Imagine if the whole world was ice cold. There would not be deserts, summer, or tank tops! Wouldn't that be boring? Did you notice in the Bible that no two disciples were the same. Every disciple brought something different to the table.
Everyone on this earth also brings something different to the table. God made you for you.
In actuality, only about 31.5% of the world believes in God and is a so called “Christian”. If you give into one conformity and dress like everyone else, you may also go along with a certain religion that you do not really believe.
God warned us that the world will think differently from His followers. John 15:18-19 says, “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” The world will hate you, but God loves you. He wants the best for you, and you should want to glorify Him in everything you do.
To wrap everything together, be yourself. Who cares if you play videogames, love school, or secretly love to sing? Embrace who you are. Embrace your love for Christ. Remember the people who waved palm branches and welcomed Jesus? Those were the same people who yelled, “CRUCIFY HIM!” These people fell into conformity. They yelled because “everyone else was!” Don’t be like everyone else. Be you!
I really enjoy this section on conformity! My favorite books on conformity are Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli and So Not Okay by Nancy Rue. These books portray great examples of conformity!
